Two ways to get privacy in California

Privacy within California. One California LLC, set up so your personal name and address don’t appear on the public state filings. You pay California’s fees only.

A two-state setup. A holding LLC is formed in a state that doesn’t publish owner names, often Wyoming, and then registered to do business in California. Because it operates in California, it still files California’s Statement of Information and still owes California’s $800 annual tax. It also pays the other state’s yearly fees and a registered agent in both states, which is why it usually costs more in the first year and every year after.

Questions

Is a Wyoming LLC cheaper for California privacy?

Usually not. A Wyoming LLC that does business in California must register here, file California’s Statement of Information and pay the $800 annual tax, on top of Wyoming’s fees and a second registered agent.

Does any option hide me from the IRS or the Franchise Tax Board?

No. Privacy services keep your name off public business records. Tax agencies, banks and courts can still require ownership information.
